Pistol River is an unincorporated community in Curry County, Oregon. The small community has a population of only about 100 people. It is located near the Pistol River and the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint. The town of Pistol River takes its name from the stream that flows past it. A militia soldier named James Mace lost his pistol in the river in 1853, during the Rogue River Wars, and was given the name Pistol River.
Pistol River area is known for its windsurfing, and many say it has the best windsurfing in the state. Pistol River State Park is located about 20 miles from this community which is set in the dunes and offers hiking, horseback riding, beach access, and fishing.
